Local Students Win Scholarships at the MLTI Student Technology Team Conference

Seventy-seven middle and high-school students from School Union 60, SAD 4, SAD 68 and SAD 46 attended the MLTI Student Technology Team Conference on Friday, May 29, 2009 at the University of Maine in Orono.

Presenters at the sessions included students, teachers, faculty and students from Maine's universities, Maine Learning Technology Initiative staff, and employees of Apple, Inc.  Armed with enthusiasm and laptops, students set out to attend sessions with topics including computer programming, real-time data collection using sensors, online social networking as an educational tool, student technology leadership, cutting edge software, as well as many others.

For the final session of the day, all students gathered together in Hutchins Concert Hall for a "Google Super Session" lead by four Maine teachers who are certified Google Educators.  State-of-the-art applications powered by Google were demonstrated with all 800 students in attendance (laptops in hand) connected and participating electronically in an online discussion.  Susan Gendron, Education Commissioner, and Dr. George Nelson, a NASA employee who oversees configuration of the International Space Station, a finalist in the 2009 astronaut selection process, a University of Maine alumnus, and a Bangor native, both addressed the audience live via web cam.

The University of Maine's Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering presented ten $1000 scholarships as door prizes to students.  Recipients included two local students:  Leah Word, a SeDoMoCha Middle School seventh grader, and Ryan Jackson, a Dexter Middle School seventh grader.  Students also had an opportunity to win other prizes including digital cameras, iPods, and flash drives.
