I would like to welcome back all students and staff for the upcoming 2008-2009 school year. I truly hope that the summer was restful and relaxing for everyone. Our efforts to address school climate through the adoption of an advisory program (TEAM) and the Olweus Anti-Bullying Program have had a very positive impact. Bullying behaviors and negative behaviors in general were down significantly last year, and we are committed to assuring that the positive trend continues. The emphasis this year will be on respect and adherence to the rules outlined in the student behavior handbook. We will have a zero tolerance policy for disrespectful behaviors, refusal to follow reasonable requests, bullying, as well as physical and verbal aggression. We appreciate parents' efforts to support us in making the climate as positive as possible for all members of the school community.
As stated earlier, the time taken from last year's schedule to address negative behaviors significantly improved our school's climate. Now that things are moving in the right direction, the main emphasis will shift back to academics. We will be maximizing instructional time by providing five hours of daily instruction. Students can expect to be challenged, as always, and to be held accountable for completing all work in a timely, high quality manner. One major focus will be using student assessment data to individualize instruction. In this manner, it is our hope that we can use specific interventions to provide individual students with exactly what they need to flourish academically and to make gains in conceptual understanding.
I hope that our website provides you with information that is helpful in understanding various aspects of our school, its curriculum and other programs that support our students. Sincerely, Jay Robinson, Principal |
